West Seneca’s Composting Story

Phase I

During the Spring and Summer of 2023, a pilot composting program took place for four months, sponsored by an anonymous West Seneca resident. Participants collected food scraps at home and brought them to the drop off location throughout the pilot. Due to positive feedback at the conclusion of this pilot, the Town of West Seneca decided to continue with Phase II!

Phase II

This next phase of the pilot took place over one full year and involved over 120 West Seneca households. Phase II included more available space for sign ups and monthly check ins with residents to understand how the pilot was progressing and could be improved.

Phase II, CONTINUED

The program has continued on with the drop off model and 120-household cap, though with the inclusion of a second drop off location on Mineral Springs Rd. We’ve been holding steady, maintaining participation and growing awareness since the summer of 2025. We hope a further expansion is in the future, but for now Phase II is funded through early 2027.

West Seneca Drop Off Testimonials

  • The two drop off spots in town make it so easy to drop off allowable food scraps as part of normal errand running. Since staring with the program I pretty much only have one bag of regular trash a week. I am thankful our town has given us the chance to participate in the program.

  • I love our town composting program because it makes it easy for everyone to reduce waste and take care of the environment. Instead of throwing food scraps away, we’re turning them into something useful. It also shows that small actions can add up when everyone participates. It makes me proud to live in a town that cares about sustainability.

  • I am not a "tree hugger," but I love the FACT that I am helping reduce the tipping expense to the Town. I also purchase compost from Farmers Compost Pirate and consider this the full circle experience. I encourage the Town of West Seneca to expand the Farmers Compost project to reduce the kitchen/table waste that is unnecessarily dispose of.

  • I love this program for many reasons. The first being it's a great way to teach our kids how the science of it all works. Purchasing, cooking and then disposing of waste in a productive way. It shows respect for the earth by keeping scraps out of landfill. Yes, we store scraps in our freezer but the minimal space it takes up teaches the next generation to be more mindful than us. … In warmer weather we're close enough to walk to the disposal bins, which are in a great location at Main and Union, and helps us participate in more town offerings with the library, playground, pool and community center.

  • This program is huge for me. I live alone and in a condo, so I do not own outside space to set up my own compost bins. It is super easy to save all compostable food scraps in a canister in my freezer and drop off at the convenient town hall location once or twice a month. So much less waste!
