Got our first heaping and steaming pile of horse bedding today at Michigan St. It’s beautiful. Wilson St and Common Roots had their first drop over the past few weeks. Coming from the Equestrian Club, where things are kept tidy, it’s heavy on the shavings and light on the manure. That’s a good thing cause we’re gonna need all the carbon we can get for our composting efforts.
Be on the lookout this summer for a large dump truck driving around town with a pirate flag and full of our loot, glorious food waste. For an urban farmer the stuff is gold. It is densely packed molecules of life ripe for decomposing then recomposing. All the while, inviting to a fantastical party an orgy of living things, the microorganisms and the micro-creatures. Feasting upon and excreting upon organic matter in a frenzied reorganization and rebuilding of life matter. And THAT is what we call compost. Dig it?
